(Mis/Dis)Information
A Walk-through the Whys and Hows of Disinformation
disinformation, dissemination, literacy, fake news, propaganda
Disinformation is not a recent concept, but thanks to the massification of online information sharing,
the phenomenon takes on a new dimension and strength. We are witnessing an information disorder of
inaccurate and/or intentionally misleading information. The scale of the phenomenon relates to how
traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are gradually forced to adapt their methods of
disseminating information as a consumable commodity of the digital space. This shift reconfigures the
ways in which online information is monetized, which paves the way for the lucrative business of disseminating disinformation.
The (Mis/Dis)Informationproject analyzes and breaks down this ecosystem into its parts,
providing a walk-through the Whys and Hows of misinformation. As Claire Wardle states "To understand
the current information ecosystem, we need to break down three elements: the different types of content that are being created and shared;
the motivations of those who create this content and the ways this content is being disseminated".
Based on Paulo Pena and Claire Wardle's studies, a narrative is devised in an explorable three-dimensional space that exposes the
cycle of disinformation dissemination, from its genesis, origins and motivations to the way it is made. According to this diagrammatic approach,
the project seeks to promote literacy on the dissemination of disinformation, whether accidental, intentional, or malicious, and to raise
awareness about the implications of this phenomenon.
